Your Homeowner's Summer Checklist

It’s hard to believe it’s already July and that we’re close to being halfway through the summer. Whether you are trying to squeeze out all that summer has to offer, or are looking forward to those crisp fall months on the horizon, there are a few things that may need your attention. Here are the top 5 things on our summer checklist.

Windows
Cleaning your windows and screens is a great weekend project. Use a glass cleaner or a homemade mixture of water and vinegar solution with a microfiber cloth to get your windows clear and streak free. Pro tip: For large windows, try using a squeegee. While hosing off your screens make sure to check for holes! The last thing you want is a mosquito making itself at home while you're trying to enjoy the summer breeze.

Conserve Water
Make sure to water your garden and lawn during the cooler parts of the day. Avoid watering your plants in the afternoon when the sun is high in the sky, the water will evaporate before the roots get a chance to absorb it! Early in the morning or in the evening are great times to hydrate your plants while also conserving water.

Clean Porch Lights
Spiders and other bugs love to make their homes in outdoor light fixtures. If they’re easily removable, take them inside and clean them with some soap and water. If you cannot move them, make sure the power is off and clean with a damp microfiber cloth and then dry. This is also a good time to change any light bulbs that may have burnt out.

Keep your home safe while traveling
Vacation season is upon us. Before going away, make sure to put some precautions in place to keep your home safe. Let your neighbors know you'll be away and find someone who can stop by to check on your house and grab your mail while you're gone. Timed lighting and a well-manicured exterior can make your house less appealing to break into.

Check Safety Devices
Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors should be checked monthly to make sure they are in working order. If any of your detectors are over 10 years old, it is time to replace them. Replace batteries where needed and check expiration dates on fire extinguishers.
